I am Martina.
Let me tell you about my journey and how I ended up making jewellery inspired by mushrooms.
Earliest memories are of wandering through forests with my mother, filling baskets with mushrooms and discovering the imaginative world hidden in my mind. Growing up in Slovakia, jewellery and small objects became a way to unleash my creativity into the material world. However those particular memories of mushroom foraging, became a core memory which has heavily influenced my practise, when I was looking for my voice as a designer and artist.
I later moved to London to study Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martins, where the core memories of mine fully started forming into an artistic language. Here I started developing my first collections. Part of the growth was my interest jewellery craftsmanship with through specialist training and work opportunities. Big credit needs to be given to Castro Smith and his team, for guiding me in my student years, and other jewellers, silversmiths and gem carvers across UK and Japan. Each experience has been part of the language through which I create.
Over the years I have been building my personal practise and had been given many amazing opportunities to grow. Honorable mentions are, being a Sarabande Foundation alumni, founded by Alexander McQueen, and part of the Jewelry Cast established by Darren Hildrow.
Few awards have helped me to continue, like support from the Swarovski Foundation as well as Cockpit’s Designer of the Year. Best part was winning Young Designer award for 2024 in Slovakia.
Throughout the years I have been featured in publications including Vogue, Dazed, Elle UK, Forbes, The Times and the Financial Times. Today, my jewellery can be found at Dover Street Market London and NYC, Twist US and Louisa Guinness Gallery in London.
Today I am based between London and Slovakia where I create all of my pieces by hand. Every piece I create is rooted in the same curiosity and appreciation for the natural world. Through jewellery, I transform these inspirations into contemporary talismans that celebrate magic, craftsmanship and our connection to the natural world.
